ROBOTICS

This page includes resources we are using / have used as part of our Robotics program in Science Club.  Our Science Club is comprised of more than 25 students from 5th and 6th grade at GW Long Elementary.  We've started our program with a single Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 kit and four laptop computers (which  allows us to break into four teams of students).

Our weekly lessons are provided below.  These are PowerPoint presentations and some have embedded video in them.  Be sure to view as a slideshow and click on the black squares (as required) to view the embedded videos.

On Week 4, our Science Club began a new approach to teaching robotics based upon Lego Mindstorms NXT, The Mayan Adventure, by James Floyd Kelley, Published by Apress, 2006.  His book (available from Amazon) tells the story of a boy working with his archaeologist uncle (and the NXT robot) to explore Mayan ruins.  We made this change because it creates situations where the students have to perform more problem solving and design activities.  It's actually much more challenging and hopefully - will be more rewarding for the young scientists!
